About the Project

OES created a traveling exhibit that provides context for visitors of all ages to understand the physical, social, and political landscape of Illinois and the challenges facing freedom seekers. OES solicited engagement from local Black communities to guide the relevance of the exhibit experience and provide their unique perspective.

The exhibit will travel within the 43-county Heritage Area, and will reach a general audience through its placement at libraries, schools, and other public buildings.

Project parameters included a 600 square foot exhibit with the ability to pack down into a standard minivan for transport, and not only be visually interesting with engaging content, but also be able to be set up easily by no more than two people and endlessly flexible with its display configuration.

This exhibit was the recipient of a 2025 AASLH Leadership in History Award.
